Final Fantasy 7 might get a PlayStation 5 release, too

There’s some room for interpretation here, but a comment made by Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda points towards the possibility of a PS5 version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s first episode of who knows how many, which will focus on Midgar, hits PS4 on March 3, 2020. Of course, there’s a good chance that the PlayStation 5 will also release before 2020 is over, and from there future installments of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake releasing on PS4 might feel a bit outdated.

With this in mind, Game Informer has asked Yosuke Matsuda the obvious question during E3 – will there be a next-gen version of the game?

Matsuda gave a response that, on first glance, looks like a clear ‘yes’, but there’s some room for interpretation and interrogation here.

“I believe that our teams have made it so that the game will support both the next generation and the current generation of consoles”, Matsuda said. “I believe it is being developed so that it is going to be playable on both, so I’m not really concerned about that and I believe that the fans are also going to be able to enjoy it on both, including the next-generation of consoles.”

There are two things to note here – the use of ‘I believe’ throughout, rather than definitive statements, and the fact that both the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett will likely be backwards compatible with previous generations, meaning that a PS4 game would, theoretically, be playable well into the future on PS5.

Still, it’s an interesting response. Don’t expect to find out anything more concrete about the future of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake until after next year’s initial release, though.
